Each year, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) is required by law to summarize the key challenges facing the IRS. For fiscal year 2022, the top challenge is the administration of tax law changes and pandemic relief benefits. The IRS was heavily impacted by the pandemic and unable to perform many of its essential functions. At the same time, COVID-related law changes created additional work for the IRS, such as distribution of millions of stimulus checks and pandemic-related benefits. The combination of those factors resulted in a heavy backlog of unprocessed returns at the start of FY 2022. Here’s more from TIGTA’s summary: https://bit.ly/3EIhed7
